Background

In August 2021, residents notified the City of Longmont of potential safety issues regarding lines of sight at the intersections of Third Avenue and Sherman Street.

The Engineering division paid several field visits to these intersections, during which staff confirmed that lines of sight were obstructed by cars parked on Third Avenue, particularly in late afternoon and early evening. Clear lines of sight were not present in accordance with City standards, resulting in vehicular safety issues and potential danger to pedestrians.

Staff initiated a plan to restrict parking at several locations along Third Avenue to provide safe access from Sherman Street. Adjustments made in December 2021 resulted in the net loss of about nine parking spaces. The parking restrictions in this area of Third Avenue are critical to resolve the line-of-sight issues and provide an improved level of safety at these intersections. The City of Longmont Police Services, Code Enforcement and Parking Enforcement are seeking voluntary compliance with the new parking restrictions; however, parking in this area will be enforced.

Due to concerns over new parking restrictions, a public meeting was held on March 7, 2022, for residents and businesses in the general vicinity of the parking modifications on Third Avenue.

Updates

A public meeting was held on April 6, 2023 for residences and businesses located on or near Third Avenue to address any questions or concerns related to the ongoing and upcoming improvements to Third Avenue. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers from City Engineering staff and Chief of Police, Jeff Satur.
