Traffic ruins Main St.
I understand that Main is a street and streets have traffic but nobody wants to have a meal on a busy street. No one wants to go to happy hour where you can't hear your friend talk over the sound of the traffic. I don't want to read a book on a bench while inhaling the exhaust from all the modified mufflers going by.
If we are going to have a vibrant community around Main St, we must reduce the amount of traffic going by. I don't mean reducing congestion; I mean reducing the number of cars that move through the area by providing alternate (better) routes to go N-S in Longmont. Hover is a great solution for rerouting traffic but I think we can do more to discourage traffic on Main between Ken Pratt and Mountain View (or even 66). We can put in speed bumps. We can make it clear that it is a pedestrian zone and pedestrian travel is preferred by putting in additional light-up yield signs that trigger immediately. We need to build a culture of discouraging vehicle travel through Main St.
