Universal Recycling Ordinance is in effect
Starting Jan. 1, 2024, the Universal Recycling Ordinance will be in effect, which requires recycling services for commercial properties and multifamily properties within the City of Longmont.
In addition, statewide bans of plastic bags and Polystirene (Styrofoam) go into effect at this time.
City Council Passes Universal Recycling Ordinance
The Longmont City Council passed the Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO) in the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, July 11, to support the City’s goal of diverting 75% of our waste from the landfill by 2030 and 95% by 2050. The Ordinance focuses on a phased implementation for recycling and organics diversion for commercial and large multifamily properties.

City Council Discussion and Direction
City of Longmont staff are returning to City Council for discussion and direction on the update to the Zero Waste Resolution at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27. After direction given at the June 28 City Council meeting, staff has updated the Resolution and will be presenting two iterations for Council to vote on. This Resolution will provide guidance on the next steps for increasing waste diversion in the community, including the drafting of a Universal Recycling Ordinance which staff is on track to discuss with Council by the end of 2022.
